Planning With Purpose: Conscious Conception, IUI, and Preparing for Baby—From a Black Midwife in the DMV

A joyful family cuddles in bed shortly after birth. The mother, glowing and wrapped in soft blankets, holds her newborn close to her chest. Her partner beams with pride. A caring midwife stands nearby, smiling gently, witnessing the love and peace of this sacred postpartum moment.

Hey there, family

If you’re thinking about growing your family, I’m sending you love, excitement, and a whole lot of encouragement! Whether you’re hoping to conceive naturally, using IUI (intrauterine insemination), or just beginning to learn how your cycle works, this post is for you.

As a midwife serving families in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia, I’ve had the honor of walking with many folks through every stage of the fertility and birth journey—from conscious conception to beautiful home births. And guess what? It all starts with intention.

Let’s talk about how to prepare your mind, body, wallet, and womb for the sacred work of bringing life into the world.

1. What Is Conscious Conception?

Conscious conception is all about being intentional—emotionally, spiritually, physically, and even financially—as you prepare to welcome a baby. It’s saying “yes” to aligning your whole self with your vision for parenthood.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I spiritually and emotionally ready?

  • Is my body nourished and well-supported?

  • Do I know my cycle and when I ovulate?

  • What kind of birth do I envision?

This is your moment to ground yourself, slow down, and connect with your purpose.

2. Tracking Your Cycle: Know Your Flow, Know Your Power

If you’re not tracking your cycle yet, it’s time to start. Understanding your ovulation window is key whether you’re trying naturally or preparing for IUI.

You can track your:

  • Basal body temperature (BBT)

  • Cervical mucus

  • Cycle days (using apps like Kindara or Fertility Friend)

Need guidance? As a midwife who also supports preconception care, I can walk you through cycle charting in a way that makes sense for your body.

3. IUI + Midwifery Support: Yes, They Can Go Together!

If you’re choosing IUI (intrauterine insemination)—with a partner or donor—you still deserve holistic, affirming support.

While your fertility specialist handles the insemination, I can help you:

  • Track ovulation naturally

  • Prepare your womb with herbs, nutrition, and lifestyle changes

  • Offer emotional and spiritual support through the journey

  • Plan for your dream home birth after conception

You don’t have to walk this path alone. You can have both medical and midwifery care working for your good.

4. Budgeting for Baby + Home Birth

Let’s be real—babies aren’t cheap. But they also don’t require everything the world tries to sell us. Start with a baby budgeting plan that includes:

  • Prenatal care and home birth midwife fees (start saving early!)

  • Doula support if desired

  • Essentials like diapers, baby clothes, and a safe sleeping space

  • A postpartum plan (meals, support, rest!)

I offer payment plans for home birth care, and we can talk through health share options, Medicaid, HSA use, and creative ways to afford out-of-hospital birth.

5. Rooting Your Journey in Community + Culture

As a Black midwife, I know how important it is to feel seen, heard, and culturally safe. Your journey to conception and birth should be sacred, not stressful. Whether you’re partnered, single by choice, or walking a unique path to parenthood—you deserve support that honors who you are.

Here in the DMV, I’m building a space for that kind of care. Whole-person, culturally rooted, faith-respecting, and deeply affirming.

Let’s Plan This Baby, Together.
If you’re ready to:

  • Track your cycle

  • Explore IUI or natural conception

  • Budget for a home birth in Maryland, DC, or Virginia

  • Be supported by a midwife who sees and honors you...

Let’s connect. I offer preconception consultations, and I’d love to walk with you through this season of preparation and purpose.
